Political Theory 1010 Paper 2 Are political parties essential, or detrimental, to democratic decisionmaking? In answering this question, give careful consideration to the different ways political parties might assist or sabotage desirable forms of democratic rule, evaluating in each case their implications for the question. A political party is a group of people who share similar ideas regarding the way a country should be governed and sought to obtain the majority of the seats in the political office to further the policies they advocate. Democratic decision-making is a participative decision making style in which citizens have an equal say in the decisions that affect their lives. They tend to become such large organizations with tremendous amount of reach and power that they dominate the government and become less and less accountable to the people. The parties gain the power to suppress civil cases and manipulate their way into the parliament. Large parties are also able to turn elections in their favor and spend massive amounts of money and society’s scarce resources into election campaigning, solely based on marketing and advertisement. In the contemporary world, it is hard to imagine a democracy without political parties.
